About Us

J.Fox Soul is a boutique music mentoring, production and entertainment company based on the Gold Coast in Australia. We specialise in giving unique and empowering education to people of all ages and experience levels looking to explore and expand their career, or love affair with music. We don’t just teach though, we are also highly producers of music and film, and designers of websites, graphics and print media.

History

J.Fox Soul was created by singer, songwriter, director, film producer and entrepreneur James Higgins in 2009 when he started working as a music teacher after nearly as decade of working as a professional musician. He saw that there was a big whole in the education market which many young aspiring professionals were falling into.

Working closely with his wife Vira Rubenstein (a professional Behaviour Manager and Counsellor with extensive experience teaching people with learning difficulties) he designed a system of individualised education that celebrates the unique learning style of each student and allows for dynamic and flexible evolution through the teaching process.

He combined this new music education model with his professional production facilities to allow for limitless exploration of the creative musical process. Students who came in to work on their guitar playing suddenly found themselves writing songs and working with James to arrange and produce professional quality recordings ready to start selling. James attributes this acceleration of learning to the limitless possibilities found when you combine individualised teaching methods with a room full of professional tools.

After moving through a few temporary and mobile studio locations, James finally found the perfect space for his creative facility in Burleigh Heads, and moved into in early 2011.

Foxden Studio

Foxden Studio has been accumulated and designed over 6 years, and is built on the philosophy that both old and new technology have great things to offer. As such, the studio is compatible with the latest Pro Tools and Logic DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) and the main console is a vintage (early 1980s) Tascam M520 fully analog inline recording desk. The studio also has an extensive collection of new and old guitars, keyboards, percussion instruments, amps and plugins to make it a fully functional production facility ready to tackle projects of any genre, any size, and any time!

The J.Fox Soul Team

James Higgins (Director, Head Producer, Head Mentor)

James began his professional music career at the age of 13 when he began writing songs, teaching himself guitar, keyboard and digital recording technique and by the age of 15 he had produced three albums, one of which was produced entirely on his own (he played every instrument!).

Ten years of non-stop work, trials and tribulations, great failures and great successes later, Higgins boasts an impressive portfolio of acclaimed albums and touring escapades as an artist, bandleader, songwriter and producer. Highlights include touring Europe in 2008 with Nude Continuum (now SOUL CONTINUUM), performing alongside artists like the Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai. Soul Continuum‘s sophomore album (and Higgins’ debut as a frontman) Phoenix to Fox has received praise from all over the globe and Soul Continuum continue to stun audiences in Australia and beyond, already playing support gigs with artists like Los Amigos Invisibles and Katie Noonan and the Captains. More recently James has embarked on his own journey as THE QUICK BROWN FOX.

James has an immense passion for sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience – both the positives and the pitfalls – with people beginning their musical career. He has already become renowned in the music education scene as innovative, genuine and deeply connective with his students. James teaches all the instruments available at J.Fox Soul, but specialises in mentoring aspiring professionals on all aspects of a career in music, and as such he runs the J.Fox Soul Professional Development Program.

Vira Rubenstein (Admin, Educational Support, Artistic Designer)

Vira has had a relationship with music most of her life, with an early start in Ballet and other dance, and later picking up the flute and piano and playing throughout her schooling years. Also a prolific visual artist and designer, Vira has established a name for herself as a creator of detailed, unique and captivating imagery. Her visual aesthetic has also brought life to the logos, websites and album artwork for many J.Fox Soul clients.

Vira has worked for almost a decade in Behaviour Management and Counselling since completing her studies at Bond University and moving into a permanent position there as Practicum Officer and Research Fellow. She is also closely involved with Bond’s new Centre for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her experience working with children with learning and behavioural difficulties such as ASD and Aspergers has been an essential component of the design and delivery of J.Fox Soul’s mentoring philosophies. With Vira’s expertise on board we are able to offer mentoring to people of all ages, experience levels, and even those with disabilities.
As well as design and educational support, Vira is the administrator of J.Fox Soul, and will likely be the person to answer the phone and take your booking for mentoring, production or entertainment services. Don’t hesitate to give her a call and get to know her and the team!
